Overview

Barracuda Networks is a US-based cybersecurity company that maintains the BRBL (Barracuda Reputation Block List), a freely available blacklist. Many businesses use Barracuda's email security gateways, giving this blacklist significant reach.

Compared to Spamhaus's human-reviewed approach, Barracuda relies more heavily on automated detection. They operate a large network of spam traps deployed worldwide to catch spam sources.

How It Works

Barracuda's detection runs on two main systems: globally distributed honeypot mailboxes that have never been registered for any service (any email they receive is definitively spam), and pattern analysis of known spam characteristics. If your IP sends email to these honeypots, it gets listed automatically.

Unlike Spamhaus, Barracuda doesn't distinguish between listing reasons (malware, open relay, etc.) β€” everything goes into one unified list.

How to Get Delisted

The good news: Barracuda delisting is relatively fast. If spam stops coming from your IP, the listing typically expires after about 12 hours. You can also submit a manual removal request at barracudacentral.org/lookups, usually processed within a few hours.

Be aware that getting listed and delisted repeatedly in a short period may cause Barracuda to extend the automatic delisting wait time.
