Overview

SPFBL DNSBL was a Brazilian anti-spam project that combined traditional blacklisting with SPF (Sender Policy Framework) validation. Rather than treating SPF failures as a simple pass/fail signal, SPFBL used SPF alignment failures as one input in a broader reputation scoring system β€” IPs sending with forged or misaligned sender domains received higher risk scores.

The project was an interesting experiment in using authentication failures as a spam signal. SPFBL DNSBL has been discontinued.

How It Works

SPFBL analyzed incoming email at participating mail servers, checking SPF records and correlating authentication results with spam reports. IPs that repeatedly sent email failing SPF checks β€” particularly where the forged domain belonged to legitimate organizations β€” were added to the blacklist. The system also incorporated feedback from participating Brazilian mail operators.

How to Get Delisted

SPFBL DNSBL is no longer active. To prevent similar listings on active systems, ensure your mail server sends from IPs covered by your domain's SPF record, and that your DKIM signatures are properly configured. These authentication measures reduce the risk of being flagged by reputation systems that incorporate authentication signals.
